On July 12, 2009, the day after the DCI Orlando Regional, Teal Sound will be hosting a gathering for ALL Florida Drum Corps Alumni to come out and meet each other, eat and party with Teal Sound—Florida’s Only DCI Touring Drum and Bugle Corps. The event will be held at Central Florida Fairgrounds in Orlando, FL. and start @ 11am. But if you want to come early, you will get to see Teal Sound rehearse their 2009 Production: The Velvet Rope.

We would like this event to be a memorable day for Florida Drum Corps Alumni; where we can all share some time together, munch out on some great food and PB & J, relive our most favorite times in drum corps and of course tell tall tales of the days when we marched in drum corps. We invite you to bring a pot luck style lunch so, please bring your favorite foods (enough for 8 people) and beverages and enjoy.

Teal Sound completes a very successful April Camp Weekend

This past weekend saw the full corps together for the first time all season and had many other exciting things going on with it as well. The corps had several visitors for the weekend including Dr. David Kampshroer, from the Drum Corps International PRC committee. Dr. Dave was in to review the corps and it's organization for a possible recommendation into World Class participation in 2010. The Board of Directors, Admin., members and VolunTeals all enjoyed his visit and the comments that he shared with us over the weekend.

The corps also had invited special guest, Mr. Bill Howard, former director of the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps, to visit with us for the weekend. Bill evaluated and observed the corps as a whole and made suggestions on how to improve the corps overall operations. His commentary with us was priceless and we appreciate his knowledge and giving of his time to spend with all of us over the weekend. Having both Dr. Dave and Bill in on the same weekend was a tremendous treat for all of us. The members really enjoyed hearing from them on the history of DCI and of the stories of competition between both of the former directors and their programs from back in the day.

We would also like to thank Chris Hankes, from Jupiter Band Instruments and our Mapex/Majestic representative for being with us too. We are all very excited about beginning our second year of involvement with Jupiter here at Teal. The care and concern that this company puts into its programs has really been more than we could have ever expected. Everyone is looking forward to recieving the new battery instruments in for this season and the improvements that they have made over the past year.

On another note, the weather was perfect, our new camp location at Matanzas HS was tremendous and the corps learned about 3 minutes of drill to this year's production of "The Velvet Rope" this past weekend. Thanks to everyone who was in attendance and helped to make this first full corps camp a huge success.

We can now say that the 2009 season is fully underway as we draw closer to move-ins. Look for more reports coming after next month's camp.

Parents and VolunTeals Summer Crew Schedule

The premliminary schedule for crewing for the summer is now available on the VolunTeals and Parents page. Please look this over and contact Debbie Swift ASAP at debbie@tealsound.org so that she can continue to fill in the blanks for tour. Remember, we don't move without your help and support.

Infinity finishes in Third Place at the Nashville WGI Regional

This past weekend in Nashville, TN, indoor percussion lines from all over the South, East and Midwest took to the competition floor  in the last major weekend of regional shows before WGI Finals next month. Infinity made the trek to Nashville and put on 2 very entertaining and exciting performances of their 2009 show, "Bomb Shelter," on both Saturday and Sunday. They took 2nd in prelims on Saturday with a score of 85.85 just a few tenths ahead of competitor Gateway Independent from Missouri and then on Sunday took third place with a score of 84.40 finishing behind Gateway, which had a score of 85.50. All of us here at Teal Sound want to congratulate them on their accomplishments so far this season and wish them the best of luck at WGI Finals in Dayton next month.

Matanzas High School to host April and May Camps

We would like to thank Mr. Steve Knob, Director at Matanzas High School and Dr. Chris Pryor, Principal for welcoming Teal Sound to Matanzas High School in Palm Coast, Florida for our April and May full corps camp weekends. After doing an extensive search for a facility that would accommodate us as we continue towards providing a World Class experience for our members, Matanzas High School was the perfect location. It is a beautiful 3 year old school that offers us the much needed field space and rehearsal facilities that will help us to prepare for our 2009 season. This school is conveniently located off I-95 between Daytona Beach and St. Augustine, FL on 3535 Old Kings Rd N., Palm Coast, FL. We will see everyone at this location on Friday, April 24, 2009.

Clean sweep of the WGI Percussion Regional in Orlando

Congratulations to all of the members and staffs on a clean sweep of the WGI Orlando Percussion Regional this past weekend. INFINITY won PIW, STRYKE won PIO and OSCEOLA took PIA, while AQUARIUS placed second in PIA. RIPTIDE Winter Percussion Ensemble won PIA at the FFCC show at Orange Park. "All in all it was a great weekend, to say the least, for all of the PAC units," said Brian Fisher, President of The Teal Sound, Inc.

In prelims all of the units fared well too. INFINITY was in second place behind Timber Creek Independent by .25 but hard work between shows paid off with a fine finals performance where they overtook TCI by .5. STRYKE went into the show as the only entry in PIO but found them selves in a 2 team race for finals when Brahma from USF was promoted after a very strong prelims performance. However, after an energetic performance by STRYKE in finals, they scored 84.05.and were 4.75 ahead of Brahma when the dust settled. OSCEOLA Percussion Theater and AQUARIUS Percussion Ensemble came in 1& 2 in Finals. RIPTIDE represented Pageantry Arts Concepts at the FFCC show in Orange Park and placed first with a 73.75. This is RIPTIDE's first season of competition.

All of us at The Teal Sound, Inc. look forward to your continued success in 2009.

With the recent merger of Pageantry Arts Concepts as the management company of the Winter Guard and Percussion activities of The Teal Sound, Inc., Brian will be devoting his time to the development of the entire organization. This will allow all programs to benefit and prosper under his direction and guidance.

The Teal Sound, Inc. and Pageantry Arts Concepts, Inc. Merger

The Teal Sound, Inc. and Pageantry Arts Concepts, Inc. are pleased to announce an agreement in principle to merge these two great organizations! This has come from many months of conversation and hard work on behalf of Scott Hughes, Donna Aman, Tom Hurst, John Campese, Randy Blackburn and Brian Fisher. "Young adults in the state of Florida who wish to participate in either idiom of DCI and/or WGI will benefit from this union in many ways," stated Scott Hughes, President of PAC, Inc. Under this new conglomerate, Pageantry Arts Concepts will become a division of The Teal Sound, Inc. and continue to operate as the chief management company of the corporation’s winter programs that will include the indoor percussion units of INFINITY Percussion Ensemble (PIW), STRYKE Percussion Ensemble (PIO), AQUARIUS Percussion Ensemble (PIA), OSCEOLA Percussion Theater (PIA), RIPETIDE Winter Percussion Ensemble (PIA) and the winterguard, MEDEA (IA). By and through the formation of this merger, all programs, including the Teal Sound Drum & Bugle Corps will have a stronger alliance of asset sharing, utilization and talents of integrated staffing, centralized auditions for all programs, performance opportunities outside the realm of the competition arena and a stronger business operation within the state of Florida and on the national level.

“It was our goal from the beginning to bring groups like these together as an opportunity for the musical and visual art students within Florida. This will allow us to offer more quality opportunities for Florida’s youth to perform within their own state rather than having to go elsewhere. These programs will benefit any level of student, guaranteed,” stated Blackburn, Director of Teal Sound Drum & Bugle Corps. "We are all looking forward to building a better and stronger organization from within so that these and other ensembles that join us will thrive well into the future,” said Brian Fisher, President of The Teal Sound, Inc. Mr. Blackburn also stated, “There are plenty of talented and great students throughout the state of Florida that we can now provide an almost one stop shopping atmosphere with this merger. If a student wants to participate in any phase of the marching arts, they will only have to go a short distance within the to be a part of any one of a handful of activities and during these times of economic hardship, we feel that with the quality of all these programs, one will only have to decide in which art or arts do they want to become a member of.”

Over the next year, the corporation will look towards the addition of several more winterguard teams to allow even more opportunities for Florida’s youth to participate in the exciting world of the musical and visual marching pageantry arts within Drum Corps International and Winter Guard International.

For further information about this merger, or how you can participate, please contact Mr. Brian Fisher at brian@tealsound.org.

Teal Sound selects Stanbury for new look

StanburyStanbury Uniforms is proud to be selected by DCI Open Class Finalist Teal Sound Drum and Bugle Corps to provide their new look for 2009. This will be Teal Sound’s second uniform design through Stanbury, having received their first-ever set of Stanbury Uniforms in 2004.

Teal Sound Executive Director Randy Blackburn states, “When looking to take Teal Sound into the second decade from an identity standpoint, we went directly to our partners at Stanbury Uniforms. We were looking for a unique look to help brand the corps and that came directly from the hand of Stanbury’s talented artist/designer Brent Becker.”

Teal Sound is one of the fastest-growing DCI corps on the scene. The Florida-based organization has been an Open Class finalist every year since 2004 and over the past 3 years has seen their membership more than double, to where they are now one of the largest corps on the DCI tour.

“The whole process of obtaining our new look has been wonderful, thanks to the help of Becky Still and Brent Becker. Quality of product is very important to us and from what we have had over the past several years, we felt there was no one else to better serve our needs than Stanbury.”

Stanbury Uniforms CEO Gary Roberts is proud to have Teal Sound on Stanbury’s growing roster of DCI corps. “Along with being a formidable presence on the DCI circuit, Teal Sound is making a positive impact on music education throughout the south-east. We are truly proud to count Teal Sound as part of the Stanbury family.”

Visual Caption Supervisor/Designer

Teal Sound is pleased to announce the movement of Mr. Marcos Martinez, Teal's former Visual Caption Head to the position of Visual Supervisor/Designer for the 2009 season. While looking for a unique style and development for the upcoming season, it was determined that Marcos could add the flare and flash to the program that will help to establish Teal's visual programming as it enters into its second decade of competition.

"The search for finding the right fit for Teal was right there in front of us all the time," stated Randy Blackburn, Director. " The entire design team and other caption heads all agreed at the September planning meetings that having Marcos write our visual  book was the next progression the corps needed to take as it moves into the future and its climb to World Class." Brian Fisher commented with this,  "We are very fortunate to have both Marcos and Tom on the same team and all of us are excited to see how this season progresses with these two working together."

Teal Sound is proud to introduce their new Visual Caption Head, Mr. Tom Slaughter.

Tom SlaughterTom has been involved in the pageantry arts for 26 years as a performer, instructor, designer, and adjudicator.  Tom graduated from Largo High School in Largo, FL and was a member of the Suncoast Sound Drum and Bugle Corps.  His instruction and design experience is wide ranging and has seen him having the pleasure of working with many bands and winter guards throughout the Southeastern United States.  Currently, Tom is the Visual Designer and Visual Coordinator for J.W. Mitchell High School in New Port Richey, Florida.

Tom's judging experiences are varied as well.  He currently judges for Winter Guard International and is also the Chief Judge for the Florida Federation of Judges Association (FFJA).  The FFJA manages and provides guard and percussion judges to the Florida Federation of Colorguards Circuit, the South Florida Winter Guard Association, and the Carolina Winter Ensembles Association.  During the fall, he travels extensively judging state and regional level marching band contests throughout the country.  Tom is also the West Florida Regional Director for the Florida Marching Band Coalition and serves as a resource to the band directors in that region who host FMBC regionals.

In the real world, Tom is a Technology Resource Specialist at Wilson Middle School in Tampa, Florida.  He currently resides in New Port Richey, Florida with his wife of 17 years, Rene'.  They have two sons, Brandon (15) and Ryan (10).

“We are glad to have someone with Tom’s background and ability heading up our Visual Execution program as we move into this new season,” stated corps director Randy W. Blackburn. Equally as excited to have Tom on board was Mr. Ron Ellis, program coordinator. “I have known Tom for years and the programs he has worked with are consistently at the top of their class in marching execution.” “Teal will benefit greatly from his expertise and abilities to escalate our marching performance on the field,” said Ellis.

Quantum Scores Big At DCI Championship

Written by Maja Sommerlatte, Jupiter Band Instruments

Jupiter Band InstrumentsDrum corps using the Quantum Marching instruments from Jupiter, Mapex and Majestic scored high in the inaugural DCI World Championship Open Class Finals. Congratulations to the Jersey Surf who took Third Place and Teal Sound who finished in Fifth place in the Open Class Finals.

Coming into the championships, Jersey Surf was in Third Place and Teal Sound was in Fourth place from the Quarterfinal standings.

“The Academy, Jersey Surf and Teal Sound were the right choice for Quantum’s first year, because they’re up and coming corps who have really led the way this season. They gave they had great performances --which we’re proud of. In turn they gave us great feedback on our products from their experience carrying all three Quantum lines. We couldn’t have asked for a more reciprocal relationship this inaugural season for the Quantum.” Jupiter’s VP of Marketing Derek Craig.

While the Academy’s show didn’t take them to the finals, the consensus is that they remain a corps on the rise in DCI World Class competition. Finishing the 2008 season short of their goal doesn’t overshadow their tremendous dedication.
