Teal Sound Drum & Bugle Corps

Welcome one and all to the brand new 10th Anniversary edition of the Teal Sound.

The Teal Sound is located in the River City of Jacksonville, Florida and represents the state as “Florida’s Premier DCI Touring Drum & Bugle Corps”. The corps is made up of 135 of the top talented high school and college music students from all over the southeastern U.S. Each year we audition more than 200 prospective students from the ages of 15 – 21 for a chance to participate with the Teal Sound as we tour across the United States competing against other drum & bugle corps. These students come to us as dedicated musicians that want to excel at the visual marching arts.

We provide and offer top quality instruction by a staff that is made up of both college and high school band directors as well as others from the fields of dance and the arts. We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the activity of Drum & Bugle Corps and invite you to take a minute and learn about Drum Corps International (DCI); “Marching Music’s Major League”.

What is a drum and bugle corps?

Drum and bugle corps is an intense, competitive choreographed musical experience staged on a football field by young people achieving high levels of excellence. Drum and bugle corps utilize only brass and percussion instruments supported by dance and movement utilizing flags and other props.

Why drum and bugle corps?

Through the drum and bugle corps experience, young people develop life skills including discipline, teamwork and leadership. The performance of best-in-class musicians and color guard performers engaged in the drum and bugle corps experience provides an example of unparalleled marching precision and musicianship. Due to the extreme levels of achievement in marching music, DCI participants are considered to be "the example" to high school and college marching bands throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and South Africa.

What kind of music do they play, is it all marches?

The variety of styles that are performed at a Drum Corps International event is as diverse as music itself. Over the course of the evening, you are likely to hear pop, jazz, swing, classical music, show tunes, symphonic and yes, even marches.

Where do they compete?

Drum Corps International produces a series of competitive musical events over 8 weeks from June through August. Most events take place in area high school and midsize college stadiums. Larger events, including the Drum Corps International World Championships, take place in larger college and NFL stadiums.

How many groups participate in a typical DCI event?

The number of corps varies depending on the event, but a typical tour event includes 6-8 corps. Larger regional events might include 10-14 corps while the World Championship events could include up to 35 corps in a single event.

How long does each corps perform and are they different each night?

Most corps performances run between 10 and 11 minutes. While the same show is used throughout the season, corps performances evolve from night to night. While the tunes and visual programs remain the same, it would be fair to say that it is in fact different each night.

As we begin our 10th Anniversary season, we invite you to take a few moments to browse through our brand new website and learn more about the Teal Sound.
